An annuity is a contract made between an investor and an insurance company. The investor gives the company money, in payments or lump sum, which can grow untaxed. The money can then be returned to the investor in a variety of ways. Because brokers can earn relatively high commissions from annuities, they often encourage investors to buy them, even when an annuity is not the most advantageous investment. Some brokers have also been dishonest about costs associated with annuities, such as hefty penalties for early withdrawal. While variable annuities are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, fixed annuities are not, because they are not considered securities.
